Invalidate Sessions After Access Changes
Trace role removal through application sessions, tokens, caches, and queued jobs so revoked access cannot continue.
A role can be removed in the identity provider while an application session still carries the old role. A cached JWT claim, background job, or websocket can extend access further. Choose a revocation policy that covers each path, then test it with a controlled identity.
OWASP's session guidance describes session lifecycle controls. The exact invalidation method depends on server-side sessions, stateless tokens, and provider behavior. Do not claim immediate revocation if the application only waits for token expiry.
Revocation path map
| Surface | State to check |
|---|---|
| IdP grant | User role or membership removed |
| Application session | Session invalidated or rechecked |
| Access token | Expiry or denylist behavior |
| Refresh token | Provider-side grant revoked |
| Cache | Old role and tenant claims evicted |
| Queue | Pending jobs reauthorize before effect |
| Live channel | Websocket or stream closes or rechecks |
State the maximum acceptable delay for each surface. For a high-impact admin role, a long stateless token may not meet the team's rule without a server-side check. Keep an emergency deny path for incidents, and document what it can and cannot stop.
Role-removal test
Create a synthetic user with an admin role. Open an application session and a live connection. Queue a disposable action. Remove the role, then attempt the admin API, live channel, and queued action. Each result should match the documented timing. Confirm ordinary permitted access still works if the account remains active.
Record the role change event, token age, cache version, job ID, and actual side effects. Do not store token values. Repeat with a user who changes tenant membership rather than global role. If the system cannot prove denial within its stated window, shorten the window or add current-state authorization at the effect point. Revocation is complete only when the relevant provider and application paths are checked, not when a local session record is deleted.
Make offboarding verifiable
Use the offboarding checklist to identify owners, revoke grants and verify the result. Discuss a scoped review of your application's access controls.
