Constrain Tenant Admin Overrides
Define narrow, logged exceptions to normal tenant authorization.
Support and operations staff sometimes need to see a tenant account to resolve a problem. A permanent all-tenant administrator role is a poor substitute for a controlled exception. It is difficult to know which access was necessary, and a stolen account can reach every customer. Record an override as a time-limited, purpose-bound decision.
Override record
| Field | Required entry |
|---|---|
| Tenant | Exact organization and resource class |
| Purpose | Ticket or incident reference |
| Approver | Person or policy that allowed this use |
| Actor | Staff account, not a shared login |
| Window | Start and end time |
| Actions | Read, change, export, or other specific capability |
| Evidence | Access events with redacted resource identifiers |
A support view should show a clear indicator when an override is active. It should not silently make the staff member look like a normal tenant user. For sensitive changes, require a separate approval or a second role. The OWASP Authorization Cheat Sheet supports least privilege and contextual decisions.
Test the override with synthetic tenants. Confirm that the staff account cannot access B while an A override is active, cannot act before or after the window, and cannot perform an action outside the approved set. Also check that revocation ends new access and that logs retain actor, reason, and target class without storing private content. A failed check must not leave an export or queued action.
End the exception
Give each override a grant ID and expiry in the server-side decision store. For a synthetic A read grant, revoke the ID while a staff session remains open. Require the next A read to fail, a queued export using that ID to stop before execution, and any saved link to follow its separately documented capability rule. Record the decision time for each path; a hidden UI banner is not an enforcement result.
The OWASP Multi Tenant Security Cheat Sheet explains the need for isolation in shared systems. This override record is a controlled exception to that boundary, not proof that broad access is safe. If the product cannot enforce tenant and time limits, mark the exception as a risk and redesign the support workflow before using it for customer data.
